Behind the mask

Exploring the themes of religion, culture, shame and sexuality through the medium of Pochinko clown.…

In 2012, Hew Parham ran a baby clown course at Flinders Drama Centre, where I one day improvised a turn (2-minute round) as a prim baby clown-nun who became aroused while reading the bible.

Since then, Hew and I have informally discussed putting on a show inspired by that baby clown character. We are both interested in the dichotomy of human experiences, and how contradictory things may be true at the same time. I hope to explore how complicated and multifaceted human sexuality is, and the lengths that people and cultures go to ignore, suppress, dismiss, shame and deny humans their right to a complex and layered sexual identity.

Listen to Juliana and Hew discussing the residency process below.

I want it to be this thing I can look back on with encouragement and gratitude and fun, and go just find more people to do this with. Find more people to have fun with and create and play with.
