South Australia is home to some incredibly diverse and talented artists, and we wanted to take the chance to share some of their stories in their own voices. In 2018 we worked with poet and producer Manal Younus to support a range of culturally diverse poetry artists to create videos that present them online.
Where Is The Homeland - Elyas
Elyas Alavi is an emerging artist based in Adelaide. Working in the form of painting, installation and performance art, Elyas is also an internationally renowned poet.
Searching for Me - Disha
Introducing Disha, a 14-year-old writer. Her piece is about her move from Kenya to Australia.
A poem For My Funeral - Manuela
The third artist is Manuela Akot. Manuela was a finalist in the South Australian 2018 Spoken Word Competition.
loyalty - Sunny
Sunny presents this incredible poem about the ongoing effects of the Cambodian Genocide.
Can We - Manal
In the final of our Artist Voices, we go back to Manal Younus. In it, she reminds us of the beauty there is in campaigning and the fight for the world we want to live in.
bREATHE
Featuring Manal Younus and Alexis West, ‘Breathe’ is a poem we presented for Reconciliation South Australia in 2017.
Breathe was recorded by Adelaide Convention Centre and edited by Gilbert Kemp Attrill. Performance directed by Yasmin Gurreeboo with sound design by Sascha Budimski.
Artist Voices was filmed and edited by Blackbox Films and produced by ActNow's Associate Artist Manal Younus. This project is funded by Arts South Australia and the Department of Human Services.
