Melissa White – Board Member
Melissa has been a high school Drama and English teacher for 17 years. Her career has been spent in the South East, the Riverland, Canada and she is now in her 7th year at Brighton Secondary School where she is the senior Drama teacher. With a passion for nurturing young people in theatre, Melissa was a board member, chairperson and tutor of Riverland Youth Theatre. A particular highlight was a piece she co-devised and directed with RYT in 2001. Cindy with a Twist, an issues-based project, was performed locally and at a National Conference on Domestic Violence in Perth.
Within her teaching of secondary Drama, Melissa values the opportunity to empower her students to have a voice and make a difference through theatre, with a focus on such dramatic innovators as Bertolt Brecht and Augusto Boal. After having Edwin Kemp Atrill work with her senior Drama students on Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed in 2012 she accepted an invitation to join the board. She is particularly looking forward to supporting ActNow to continue to develop collaborative projects in schools and inspire young people to be proactive in how they deal with issues prevalent in today’s society.
